So now you can buy the new iPhone 4S with all its newfangled bells and whistles, but at the obvious extra cost. As Apple releases a "budget" 8GB iPhone 4 we have to wonder which iPhone is better for your bankable stuff.

Build

iPhone 4: The iPhone 4 has a beautiful glass shell and external antenna that forms the sides to complete the industrial design. It was widely acclaimed for its innovative engineering at the time of launch, only to be panned for dropping calls on its release.
iPhone 4S: The antenna has been fixed, so claims Apple, but that's about the only design difference on the near-identical iPhone 4S. iPhone 4S owners looking for a next-gen design are fresh out of luck and won't get any more instant bragging power with the iPhone 4. Until they turn it on...

Power and performance

iPhone 4: The older iPhone 4 falls down with its weak single-core processor that seem positively antediluvian compared to the current crop of next-gen smartphones. The lack of dual-core also means greater power consumption. Tut tut.
iPhone 4S: Gamers, listen up. The iPhone 4S's dual-core A5 chip is twice as powerful and delivers up to seven times faster graphics. Launching apps and browsing will also feel quicker and more responsive than the iPhone 4, plus Apple claims its new hardware gives near-4G speeds over a 3G network. Impatient multi-taskers will do well to splash out on the iPhone 4S.

Battery life

iPhone 4: The iPhone 4's 1420mAh battery won’t get you much more than a day’s use before needing a top-up. Apple claims seven hours of talktime on its freshly-demoted number two phone.
iPhone 4S: That A5 chip will make the iPhone 4S more power-efficient but those apps will still take their toll on your battery. Apple has managed to bump up 3G call time from seven to eight hours and kept browsing time intact at six hours for 3G, or nine using Wi-Fi.
We'd need to test out the standby time to see if this is really a killer upgrade, but if you could use an incremental boost in battery performance, the iPhone 4S licks it. Just.

Screen

iPhone 4: Ground-breaking on its release with the Retina Display’s astounding 326ppi, which still hasn’t been beaten by any phone released since. The 500 cd.m2 max brightness and 800:1 contrast ratio was great but – let's face it – has been outshone by brighter, classier screens
iPhone 4S: Cue frowns here. We might love the faster graphics and we still can't fault the Retina Display but we couldn't help feeling that everything would look better on a 4in-screened iPhone 4S.
With the Samsung Galaxy S II rocking a 4.3in screen and HTC going all out with the Titan's 4.7in display, it does make the iPhone 4S feel a little bit 2010.

Camera

iPhone 4: After years of sub-par camera action, the iPhone 4 finally upped the game with a 5MP camera that produced decent, usable shots and didn't shirk 720p vids. But with a 12MP snapper piggybacking on Nokia's N8, and a raft of 8MP snappers sitting in its shadow, the iPhone4 's fame as a lensman wasn't destined to last.
iPhone 4S: The sensor on the 4S has been bumped to 8MP and you can now shoot 1080p video. Access to the camera from the lock screen, Sense UI-style, is a welcome addition to save you precious seconds, as is a more responsive virtual shutter and better exposure. The proof will be in the picture, but the iPhone 4S's camera spec sheet augues well for the newcomer.

OS and Siri

iPhone 4: One of the great sells of an iPhone is the promise of prompt OS updates and the iPhone 4 is due an iOS 5 upgrade to replace its fraying iOS 4. That'll come, but without the voice-controlled HAL-esque AI of Siri.
If you don't want Apple knowing your mum's number, you just keep that iPhone 4 in your pocket. (We should point out, out of responsibility, that simply having Siri doesn't guarantee Apple access to your family tree.)
iPhone 4S: Alas, to take full advantage of all iOS 5 has to offer, you'll want the 4S – Twitter integration, notifications, iCloud, the BBM-alike iMessage and, of course, Siri, the voice control feature which won't run on the iPhone 4's single-core processor.
After our hands-on with Siri, we think having pleasant conversations with our iPhone 4S could seriously be worth the upgrade – if you don't mind dictating texts, appointments and asking for directions out loud that is.

Price

OK, listen carefully now so you don't get your brain cells in a twist. On the seriously budget end of things (in a parallel Apple universe, admittedly) we have the iPhone 3GS at $449 for the SIM-free 8GB model. Then there's the new 8GB iPhone 4: yours for $679. And if you won't settle for anything less than the iPhone 4S you're looking at $799 for 16GB, rising to $899 for 32GB and an eye-watering $999 for the 64GB model.

Verdict

Let's say you've got an iPhone 4. Do you upgrade? Yes, but only if the thought of someone having a better camera and faster processor are top of your "iPhone 5" wish list, and you're convinced you want to stay with Apple.
Perhaps you've suddenly realised you need Siri in your life? More likely, you can stick with what you've got and sit out the wait for an iPhone with a touch more "wow" in 2012. For iPhone 3GS (or earlier) users or anyone who's yet to take a bite out of Apple iPhone, we reckon it's worth stumping up the dosh for an iPhone 4S.
Of course, there's also Google's Samsung-made Nexus Prime – expected to arrive next week – which could yet knock the 4S off its perch.

On the iPhone 4S launch date just a couple of weeks ago, we broke the news that developer Steven Troughton-Smith had successfully ported the Siri user-interface and some of the underlying code from the iPhone 4S onto the iPhone 4. The port was functional except for the most important part: talking to Apple’s servers. Now, Troughton-Smith has followed up with Chpwn to get the server fully working on an iPhone 4 and iPod touch.

Exclusive in-depth iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S Siri comparison video

Troughton-Smith exclusively provided 9to5Mac with the above high-quality video that shows Siri fully working on an iPhone 4. The video not only shows the Siri functionality on an iPhone 4, but is in depth and shows a side-to-side comparison against its newer, faster sibling, the iPhone 4S. In addition, our video shows the Siri Dictation in action. A video showing the iPod touch port is after the break. Troughton-Smith also shared with us some specifics about the porting.

Troughton-Smith tells us that an iPhone 4S jailbreak was necessary in order to accomplish the task of porting the proper files for Siri’s servers to connect to an iPhone 4. I also sat down with Troughton-Smith for an exclusive interview about the port:

Mark: Where do you go from here with the port?

Steven: At this point it’s all about confirming this works across devices, making it reproducible (we got it working on two devices today), and documenting everything. It does require files from an iPhone 4S which aren’t ours to distribute, and it also requires a validation token from the iPhone 4S that has to be pulled live from a jailbroken iPhone 4S, and it’s about a 20-step process right now.

Mark: In its current state, is the port 100% functional, is there anything you would like to see work better?

Steven: Yes, it seems to be 100% functional. I’m working on the rough edges, but everything that works on the iPhone 4S seems to work here.

Mark: Do you ever see Siri showing up in Cydia (or another jailbreak store) for non natively supported devices?

Steven: No, I could not be a part of that. I have no doubts that others will package this up and distribute it quasi-illegally, or try and sell it to people. I am only interested in the technology and making it work; proving that it works and works well on the iPhone 4 and other devices.

Mark: So, you also got Siri working on the fourth-generation iPod touch, how is that working out?

Steven: We got chpwn’s iPod touch up and running with Siri after proving it works on my iPhone 4. Unfortunately the microphone on the iPod is nowhere near as good as the iPhone – you will notice that the Siri level meter hardly moves when you talk to it. While it does work, you have to speak loudly and clearly to the iPod.

Mark: How long did porting take you, what was the “I got it” moment?

Steven: Basically, I already had everything I needed to make it work. I had spent a lot of time mapping out in my head exactly how Siri works on the iPhone. All I needed was access to a jailbroken iPhone 4S to put my hunch to the test. It literally took no longer than 10 minutes to put all the pieces in place and perform our first test on my iPhone 4, and it was an instant success.

Why Apple Will Be Just Fine For at Least 5 Years

For years pundits and analysts wondered if Apple could survive without its visionary CEO Steve Jobs. And with the Apple founder’s resignation earlier this year, and then tragic passing, it looks like they are going to get their answer.

But Apple’s future doesn’t look too gloomy. A majority of its key players are still with thecompany. And it doesn’t look like they’re going anywhere anytime soon, as several of them were just given millions of reasons to stick around…

Noting a recent filing with the US Securities and Exchange Commission, MacRumors is reporting that Apple has awarded several of its executives major bonuses. The extramoney comes in the form of company stock, and ranges between 100,000 and 150,000 shares.

Given that Apple is currently trading around $400 per share, the bonuses are equivalent to at least $40 million dollars. But the shares won’t be tradable for another 5 years, meaning those who received the bonuses must stick around a while to collect.

Not only does this entice executives to stick around, it also encourages them to perform at a high level. Since the company’s stock price depends on its performance, the value of their bonuses could drop dramatically if they don’t continue to succeed.

Among the executives that received the extra shares is Senior Vice President of Marketing Phil Schiller, Chief Financial Officer Peter Oppenheimer, and Senior Vice President of iOS Scott Forstall. Interestingly enough, Johnny Ive was not mentioned in theSEC filing.

Apple has been on a bit of a hot streak over the last decade. And with a majority of the people responsible for that success still with the company (for at least another 5 years), it doesn’t look like it’s going to end anytime soon.

Here Comes Apple’s Real Thermonuclear War Against Google

A few years ago, everything was peaceful in the Valley of Silicon. The relationship between Apple and Google was cozy and friendly. The two rising and dominant superpowers pursued compatible, non-overlapping businesses, for the most part, and helped each other fight mutual competitors like Microsoft, Amazon and others. Google’s founders worshiped Steve Jobs. Eric Schmidt was on the Apple board.

But then Google recklessly chose to attack Apple head-on with Android.

The future of Apple’s most profitable businesses will run iOS, including iPods, iPhones, iPads and probably laptop and desktop systems of the future — not to mention TV. Google’s decision to compete head-on with Apple for multi-touch platforms ended the alliance.

Steve Jobs took it personally, and told biographer Walter Isaacson that he was “willing to go thermonuclear war on this.”

But what did he mean by that?

Everyone assumes he meant lawsuits, which in fact Jobs mentioned in the context of this conflict. But that was merely the part already publicly disclosed. What Jobs did not reveal was the secret thermonuclear war to come.

I believe Apple is waging two wars against Google: One is a cold-war style proxy campaign via patent lawsuits.

But the other employs the nuclear option: The scorched-earth elimination of Google across all Apple platforms.

The Proxy Wars

In the context of Jobs’ thermonuclear war, he mentioned lawsuits. But you’ll notice that Apple isn’t suing Google itself.

Such a lawsuit would have little impact. Because Apple and Google are both American companies, a patent lawsuit against Google would mean the two companies would go to court in the US. This single case would drag on for years, while handset makers happily continued making Android devices knowing that deep-pocketed Google would, in a worst-case scenario, pay money or tweak Android in future versions to avoid specific infringements found by the courts.

Instead, Apple chose to fight via an endless series of proxy wars. So far, the company has gone after Android device makers Samsung, Motorola and HTC. Expect many more.

The message to Google’s hardware partners is: Go ahead and invest in the development of Android phones and tablets. But your investment may be squandered when we surprise you with lawsuits and other court actions in random countries at unpredictable times.

It’s called FUD, for “fear, uncertainty and doubt.” The calculation to make Android devices now includes the risk of lawsuits, injunctions, extra licensing fees to Apple and possible court orders to stop using Android.

So far, the proxy war hasn’t made a dent in the Android universe. But this is a long war, and the strategy could erode enthusiasm for Android by hardware makers in the long run.

The proxy war is Apple’s strategy for poisoning Google’s Android well. It’s war, but not thermonuclear war.

I believe the real thermonuclear option will be the near-total elimination of Google services on Apple platforms.

The Real Thermonuclear War

The real thermonuclear war will take place on the iOS platform itself, where I believe Apple will seek to replace the widespread use of Google services and apps with Apple ones.

Here are the bombs Apple has dropped or will drop in the near future:

Nuke #1: Siri to replace Google Search. Even Google’s Eric Schmidt has admitted recently that Siri is a threat to Google Search. And he’s right. In fact the ingrained habit of Googling things is already being replaced among some iPhone 4s users of just asking Siri for answers.

By default, some of those requests are handled by Wolfram-Alpha, and others by Google, the current default search engine for Siri. (You can request other search engines, and Siri will happily comply.)

Three things will turn the Siri hand-grenade into an atomic bomb: First, the use of Siri will become universal among iPhone users (right now, it’s just a fast-growing app for the minority of users with iPhone 4s phones).

Second, Apple will almost certainly roll Siri out to all platforms, enabling people with Macs and iPads to have their questions answered by Siri as an alternative to browser-based Google searches.

And third — and this is the big one — Apple will throw a switch, I believe, and make another search engine the default for Siri (and Safari).

Boom! No more Google Search.

Nuke #2: Find My Friends to replace Google Latitude

Location-based services like Latitude are pretty insignificant now, but important for the future of mobile social networking and location-based advertising and marketing. Apple has its Find My Friends app available as an option, but in the future I believe will bake it right into all platforms, and provide a strong disincentive to use Latitude.

Nuke #3: Yelp to replace Google Places

When Siri ranks restaurants for you, it uses Yelp, not Google Places. Had Apple’s and Google’s relationship remained strong, this probably wouldn’t have been the case.

Nuke #4: Apple’s maps to replace Google Maps

Apple recently bought a mapping company called C3. Apple had previously acquired mapping companies Placebase and Poly9. It seems pretty obvious that Apple intends to launch its own mapping service so it doesn’t have to keep using Google Maps, which is currently bundled on all iPhones and iPads.

Once Apple is ready to launch its own Maps-like service and application based on these three acquisitions, you can be sure they’ll drop Maps from iOS devices, and flip the switch on Siri’s default mapping service as well.

Nuke #5: iCloud to replace Google’s cloud

With iCloud so fully integrated with all of Apple’s devices and platforms, Apple users will be unlikely to have much need for Google’s many cloud services.

Nuke #6: iMessage to replace Google Gmail and Talk

iCloud integration on iOS devices will compel many current Gmail users to use Apple services for email. The same goes for Calendar and Contacts. The introduction of iCloud in iOS 5 makes synching with Gmail harder, and replacing Gmail easier.

After the bombs have been dropped and the dust has cleared, Google will find itself will barely any presence at all on Apple devices like Macs, iPads and iPhones. This represents literally hundreds of millions of users.

While Google will still have lots of users worldwide, they will suffer greatly from this because Apple users tend to be on the high end of the spectrum for ad targeting.

Steve Jobs threatened thermonuclear war. And I think Apple will deliver. But it will come not in the form of lawsuits, but on the near-total elimination of Google from Apple platforms.

Apple Still Considering Siri For The iPhone 4 – Seeds Internal Build For Testing

If you were disappointed by the fact that Apple has made Siri an exclusive iPhone 4S feature, there is still some hope for you. We’re hearing that there is still a chance that Apple will be bringing the feature to older iDevices such as the iPhone 4.

As revealed by the folks at Jailbreaknation, Apple is still considering releasing Siri on the iPhone 4 and even went as far as installing a special build of iOS 5, that includes Siri, on a number of Apple employee’s iPhone 4 handsets recently to test it out for a few days. The news, comes from a Jailbreaknation source close to Apple, which they were kind enough to let us verify, and it does appear to be legitimate.

Of course, the fact that Apple tested Siri on the iPhone 4 is a given. However, the fact that they’re considering it after the iPhone 4S release and even letting employees use it outside of the campus as a test drive shows that there still is a chance this will become a reality. Yet, Apple has now finished the test drive and removed the feature from the employees’ iPhones to minimize the chances of it getting out. We’re hoping it’s because they want it to be a surprise, and not because they have decided not to release it.

A second source also confirmed to us that the test went really well as far as performance is concerned. Unfortunately, the microphone of the iPod touch 4G is not as good as the one on the iPhone; this could hold Siri back from that device if it can’t be overcome with software.

Of course, if Apple does add Siri to the iPhone 4, this would take away one of the iPhone 4S’ top selling points, and we’re not sure if Apple would be able to handle the additional usage all the iPhone 4 users would bring.

Hopefully, Apple’s drive to make its customers happy will prevail over marketing on this one.

Lost iPhone prototype case - two plead not guilt

Two suspects in an incident that led to the loss of an iPhone 4 protoype in a bar in California last year have pleaded not guilty to charges of misdemeanor theft.

Brian Hogan, 22, of Redwood City, and Safe Wallower, 28, of Emeryville, stand accused of misappropriation of lost property, and in Wallower's case, also with possession of stolen property. The pair were charged last month.

Cnet reports that the pair appeared before Superior Court Judge Jonathan Karesh to plead their innocence on Thursday. A trial is scheduled for 28 November.

Hogan has admitted selling the iPhone 4 prototype to technology blog Gizmodo months ahead of the official release of the iPhone 4. Gizmodo and its former editor Jason Chen escaped charges relating to the incident.

The news comes in the same week that it emerged that an iPhone 5 prototype had gone missing from a Mexican restaurant in San Francisco.

However, there has been doubt cast on the reports, with the San Francisco Police Departmentdenying all knowledge of the claims. A suspect in the prototype's disappearance was allegedly searched by police and Apple investigators in July after the supposed incident.

Apple has also been attempting to gain custody of a 3G MacBook that was bought on Craigslist this week.

What's Truly New in iPhone 4

Apps on iPhone 4

Apple, through powers of both good and evil, always finds a way to captivate like no other with their new product launches. But in unveiling the iPhone 4 today, they had an unfamiliar challenge to deal with: a world that has already seen in great detail the new product they were about to announce, thanks to Gizmodo's mega-leak in April. So this time around, Apple had something more to prove: what exactly about the new iPhone 4 is new today?

High-res "Retina" Screen:

Screen

We knew the next iPhone would have a higher-resolution screen, but the specifics are in, and they're pretty impressive. 960-by-640 pixels crammed into the same 3.5-inch screen of the 3GS. They're calling it the "Retina Display," and claiming it's the highest resolution screen ever in a phone (it bests the HTC Evo 4G's ginormous 800-by-480, 4.3-inch screen in both resolution and pixel density). Apple is clearly looking to recreate the "wow" factor of the iPad's high-res, color-rich screen by bringing 78 percent of the iPad's total pixel count to a screen less than half its size. Jobs claimed on stage that the human eye, from 10 to 12 inches away, can discern detail in a screen at up to 300 pixels per inch. And the iPhone 4's screen has 326 ppi, which means sharper text and UI elements all around (which will be natively up-res'd to some extent in existing apps).

Onboard Gyroscopes

Engineers have made great strides lately in making gyroscopes smaller, cheaper and more efficient, and they're clearly part of the next-generation in mobile motion-capturing sensors. The power of ubiquitous, low-cost accelerometers was introduced to the masses in Nintendo's Wiimotes, and since then they've trickled on down to just about every smartphone or mobile gadget on the market. And just as Nintendo achieved greater motion accuracy for their Wiimotes with the gyroscopic Motion Plus attachment, which pairs both sensors' inputs into true 1:1 motion capture, Apple is adding a 3-axis gyroscope to the iPhone for the same enhancement--another claimed first for a mobile phone.

Gyroscopes add fine-tuned rotational detection to accelerometers' ability to detect linear motion, so you can expect much greater accuracy from tilt-controlled games and other apps. Steve Jobs demonstrated a Jenga-like game for the iPhone on stage, and all I can say to that is yes. The video below, made by the same folks who created the gyroscopes used in the Wii's Motion Plus, does a good job of explaining the difference between the two sensors and why it matters:

HD Video Editing with iMovie

Several smartphones on the market now can capture the same 720p, 30fps video added to the new iPhone 4, but in addition, Apple demoed an impressive mobile version of iMovie that brings insanely powerful-looking onboard editing, rendering and export to your phone. Other phones can edit video too, sure, but what Apple showed today seems to go well beyond what's currently offered. If it works as advertised (and that's a big if, considering that I find the current desktop version of iMovie the most frustrating piece of software on my Mac), this is a huge leap forward.

Engineering

Apple loves their engineering wizardry, and with the iPhone 4, those strange gaps in the side of the frame that to many seemed unfinished have been revealed as something a bit more interesting: the stainless steel rim of the phone does double duty as a multi-purpose antenna for the phone's wide range of radio communications. It's crazy to think of how much transmission takes place, with GPS, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, 3G data and cellular voice all having their own communications bands. Apple didn't hype any monumental gain in reception, but they did cite the antenna as the key to freeing up more room for a bigger battery that adds 40 percent more talk time.

FaceTime video calling on iPhone 4:

Video Calling

Apple is promoting the iPhone 4's video calling, dubbed FaceTime, as a paradigm-shift in human communication. Maybe you've heard that before describing various video-calling products over the last decade, at least? So I'm not buying the brain-melting power of a video call on my iPhone just yet. What's interesting, though, is Jobs's announcement of FaceTime as an open standard. Details are vague at the moment, but if FaceTime became a de facto option for video calling on a host of different devices with webcams (and "just works" as so many Apple products claim to do), that could be an interesting development.

Also, for now, you're limited video chatting in a place with Wi-Fi, as the demand on AT&T's network would be extreme.

IPhone 4 Tips: 10 Things New Users Should Know

The following article is a mixture of a few things – mainly tips, tricks and some guides for those of you who just bought an iPhone 4. If you are skeptical about the reception and other potential problems the iPhone 4 might have – don’t worry – you are not alone. We are also going to share some hands-on experience regarding few potential iPhone 4 problems, so read on.

Please do take note that we are not going to discuss what’s new in iOS4 (operating system) as it has been pretty much covered elsewhere. This article is basically- what you can expect with the new iPhone 4.

1. Update All Your Applications

First things first, check for application updates. If you have lot of applications installed in your previous iPhone 3G or 3GS, chances are they will need to be updated again so that they can take advantages of the new iOS4 features and iPhone 4 capabilities. So before you start trying out your existing applications on iPhone 4, take a moment to check if they need to be updated.

2. Where’s Facetime?

This is probably one of the first thing you’d like to explore on new iPhone 4, but where’s the Facetime app?Facetime is actually not an application, in fact, it’s an option available (for now) only when you make a call via WiFi to another iPhone 4 user.

Facetime is turn off by default. To turn it on, go to Settings → Phone and turn Facetime on. Carrier activation might be required. Learn more about Facetime.

3. You’ll Need A New Wallpaper

With retina display, everything on iPhone 4 looks amazingly vibrant and high quality. The screen supports up to 960×640 pixels at 326ppi, approximately 4 times higher than the resolution in a iPhone 3Gs. In another words, it makes your current wallpaper looks weak and you’ll need to look for a higher resolution wallpapers :-)

4. Try IMovie For IPhone 4

iMovie for iPhone4 is a light version of iMovie for Mac and it’s awesome. It allows you to edit and share your recorded videos on the fly. And did we mention all videos recording with iPhone 4 are in high definition (HD)?

5. Tap To Focus Object – Video

Even the smartest gadget can use a some human touch. While video recording, you can tap on different objects on the screen to have iPhone focus on them.

6. View Widescreen While Recording

If you swap from camera mode to video mode, you’ll notice that the objects are actually getting closer. That is because video recording is done in wide screen mode. To display in wide screen while recording – double tab the screen.

7. Search Web, Wikipedia On The Fly

By swiping right on the home screen, you’ll activate Spotlight. Type in something and scroll all the way to the bottom and you’ll noticed two additional search options have been added, respectively the "Search web" and "Search wikipedia". Both search uses Safari browser.

8. Mirror, Self-Shot

iPhone 4 comes with an additional front camera. By clicking on the camera icon on the top right, the front camera is activated instead of the back. We thought this could be useful for those who want to use their iPhone as a mirror, or perhaps, it makes taking self-shots easier too!

9. The IPhone 4 Reception Problem

This is the question most people are most concerned about. To be fair, yes signal bars do dropped when gripped – they call it the Death Grip.

However, signal drop only happens in areas where receptions are weak, so it very much depends a lot on your service provider. The problem is mild, don’t get too worried about it.

10. Yellow Splotches On The Screen

Some users are reporting that they have been noticing yellow patches on the iPhone 4 screen. According tomacintouch, this is just a small temporarily problem as these yellow splotches are nothing but some bonding agents for the glass that will evaporate as the device is exposed to the air. You can relax now.

Another day, another Apple “scandal” — at least, according to the tech world. Apparently a 0.2 millimeter difference in thickness between the black iPhone 4 and its new white sibling is enough to spawn tremendous interest across the web.

While the change is small, some customers that switched to the new phone are finding that their rigid phone cases won’t fit because of the size differential.

That means these customers will have to pick up new cases — though Apple’s flexible “bumper” cases will still work for the white iPhone 4. Rigid case manufacturers will also have to release separate cases for the white iPhone.

That could also pose a few concerns for the stability of the glass on the white iPhone 4 — especially for users that will try to use rigid cases designed for the black iPhone 4. Rigid cases that aren’t designed by Apple run the risk of scratching and fracturing the glass on the back on the iPhone 4. That’s because particulates can get stuck between the case and the black iPhone 4.

I personally use a rigid case because I drop my black iPhone 4 on a regular basis. Thankfully those cases are structurally sound and protect the phone. Without that kind of structural security — because the cases won’t fit snugly with the new phone — they are practically useless and might even do more harm than good.

So why is the white iPhone 4 thicker than its predecessor? Here are a few crackpot theories both the Internet — and VentureBeat — have come up with to find out why the white iPhone is that much fatter than its earlier counterpart.

1. Apple has introduced a fix for the iPhone 4′s antennae woes. The iPhone 4 has a hardware flaw that causes the phone to lose reception when held a certain way. At face value, it doesn’t look like the phone carries any kind of design differences.

2. The white paint for the new iPhone 4 required a different game plan. The white iPhone’s case did not insulate the its camera’s flash and leaked light when taking photos, according to reports. White iPhone 4 parts also caused some issues with the phone’s proximity sensor, which disables the screen when talking on the phone so owners don’t accidentally hang up, according to Apple’s Steve Wozniak.

3. The white iPhone needed additional protection from external light sources. Any light leaking into the phone could disrupt the iPhone 4′s screen and make the image less clear, which would be a sore point for Apple because it touts its “retina display” as one of the best smartphone displays in the business.

4. Apple is just trolling tech geeks everywhere to try to generate some additional publicity for the white iPhone 4 — because even a 0.2 millimeter difference is enough to generate news buzz when it comes to an Apple product.

Why iPhone 4S Release in Fall and iPhone 5 Launch in 2012 is Not Good for Apple

Apple has reportedly placed orders to component manufacturers for its next iPhone (which could be dubbed iPhone 4S) and the smartphone’s production may begin in July. This means that the smartphone could hit the stores sometime in September or October, as everybody seems to think.

As for the iPhone 5, it is unlikely that Apple will launch it in September. Actually, the iPhone 5 won’t be launched until 2012, according to Peter Misek, Jefferies’ analyst cited by IBTimes. ”[…]We believe iPhone units will reaccelerate due to: new lower-cost iPhone, iPhone 4S in the fall followed by iPhone 5 in June 2012, and more carriers”, he stated.

The iPhone 4S will not be a new iPhone version, but an improved version of the current smartphone. The possible enhancements include a dual-core A5 processor, HSPA+ support and better cameras. By releasing the iPhone 4S, the tech giant may be planning to attack prepaid and emerging markets. Apple’s COO, Tim Cook has already suggested the company may target other markets as well, when he stated that Apple’s products would not be just for the rich.

The iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S are expected to be iOS 5 compatible, Misek believes. Other analysts seem to agree with Misek’s predictions. For example, Wedbush Securities’ Scott Sutherland thinks that the iPhone 4S will bring only incremental upgrades and added that the iPhone 5 would arrive by next January and bring 4G, CDMA and GSM compatibility.

Other analysts still remain optimistic and hope Apple will roll out its iPhone 5 in September after all. “[…] we continue to expect iPhone 5 in September,” stated RBC Capital Markets’ analyst Mike Abramsky. Although the exact release date for the next-generation iPhone is still unknown, one thing is sure: the upcoming iPhone will have to face strong competition. Apple’s rivals have already lined up a series of possible iPhone killers (Google’s Nexus 4G, Motorola’s Photon 4G and Droid Bionic and Samsung’s Galaxy S 2) which are ready to take on Apple’s iPhone from day one.

That’s why it wouldn’t be such a wise move for Apple to release an “S” version of the iPhone. More than ever, the competition is fierce and Steve Jobs&Co mustn’t play around, if they want to keep their throne in the smartphone kingdom. And maybe it is not yet the moment to target the low entry market. There are still many possible clients with a sufficient household income that Apple can target. A smaller or cheaper version of the iPhone will be a feasible idea when the market will reach its saturation and the Cupertino company will have to target new ones.
